| Dyslexia
and Synthetic Phonics Certificate Courses Many
teaching assistants find themselves responsible for the education or support of
a dyslexic child or teenager but do not feel equippped with the knowledge about
dyslexia or synthetic phonics. Our distance learning
multi-media courses provide practical training in how to support and teach
a child who is, or may be, suffering from dyslexia, either in school or
at home. Dyslexia

methods for special needs |
 Studies
from the National Institutes of Child Health and Human Development have shown
that for children with difficulties learning to read, a multi-sensory
teaching method is the most effective approach. This
is crucial, but what does it mean? Using
a multi-sensory teaching approach means helping a child to learn through more
than one of the senses. Most teaching in schools is done using either sight or
hearing (auditory sensations). The child's sight is used in reading information,
looking at diagrams or pictures, or reading what is on the teacher's board. The
sense of hearing is used in listening to what the teacher says. A child may experience
difficulties with either or both of these senses. The child's vision may be affected
by difficulties with tracking, visual processing or seeing the words become fuzzy
or move around. The child's hearing may be satisfactory on a hearing test, but
auditory memory or auditory processing may be weak. More

Fishing
game - Sam and I
use a 'Fishing Game' to learn new words. Newly learned words are written onto
cards shaped like fish. A paper clip is then attached to each card. These cards
are later strewn into a large cardboard cover (this is the 'pond') Sam holds a
rod with a magnet tied to the end of the line. When the game starts, his job is
to catch a 'fish' and read the word written. He keeps the 'fish' when he correctly
reads the word. (M.H.C., Singapore) More

Confidence
building The majority of children with learning difficulties have come
to the conclusion that they are stupid! In any school in any week of the
year a child with learning difficulties experiences a huge amount of failure.
Why can't he read and spell? He must feel that he is dumb, thick, stupid. How
can a teaching assistant or teacher's aide help? More

Many
children and teens with learning difficulties aften experience problems with math/s
because of their difficulties with sequencing. Many have not yet learned the basics
- how to count to 100 forwards and backwards, and do not understand any processes
beyond addition. Jean Herold describes some techniques
which will help you as a classroom aide, teaching assistant or Learning Support
Assistant. More

Difficulty
copying from the board
A child
in my group says he has these difficulties copying from the board: •
Not enough time to copy from the board.
• I
lose my place. I try hard but get lost. It takes me a long time to check nearly
every word to find my place. It is easier in the support group because I can ask
where I am. More

How
do you indentify possible dyslexia in a pupil? The criteria most commonly
used in assessment is the disparity between a pupil's intelligence and their actual
achievement. If a pupil appears to speak and listen normally, yet they are
unable to read and spell, then there may be more to check out. Everything a teaching
assistant, special needs assistant or L.S.A. needs to know! More
